Fort Sumner Public Library

Originally nestled behind the Church of Christ, the Fort Sumner Public Library has long been a cornerstone of learning, connection, and inspiration for our community. Since relocating to its current home in the remodeled Circle K building in 1994, the library has continually expanded to meet the needs of its patrons. In the past three years alone, the library has added nearly 5,000 new items to its collection and welcomed over 200 new patrons. The library staff secured funding of $5,000.00 for new AED's benefiting the Senior Citizens Center, Community House, and the new Bosque Redondo Little League Baseball Park.

Our library is led by Melanie Ratliff, who became director in February of 2022, bringing a wealth of new ideas and dedication. Melanie serves as Member for The New Mexico Library Association. And in January, became a board member for The New Mexico Humanities Council. Melanie was honored to be recognized with the Library Leadership Award at the annual Library Association Conference in Carlsbad this previous October.

Lori Moyer, who joined the library in late 2018, is the backbone of all Youth Services at the library. Lori facilitates the Summer Reading Program, which has gained recognition across the library community both nationally and state-wide for its innovative incentive structure, "The Library Store" The only one of its kind in the nation. She has instructed other libraries on implementing this model with remarkable success.

Antoinette Ruiz, a new addition to our staff, has quickly become an invaluable asset. Today, the Fort Sumner Public Library is more than just a collection of books—it is a vibrant community hub, hosting a variety of programs, inspiring children, and parents to embrace the joy of reading. The mission of the Fort Sumner Public Library is to inform, educate, and enrich the imaginations of our citizens of all ages, from varying cultures and economic backgrounds.
