"Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner Historic Site is a division of New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. The site includes an exhibition and nature tour through history of the fort, and now, memorial. In the backdrop of the American Civil War, the site was known as the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation. From 1863 to 1868, Navajo and Mescalero Apache made the Long Walk to this lonely, inhospitable outpost. Today, the site acknowledges the events of the 1860s and allows those affected by the history to have a voice in how the story is told."
